DAY 38 JULY 2 BELGRADE, SERBIA

So long Romania!  Boca and Bubs were really impressed with what they saw with the major Romanian Capitialist Upgrade.  Continued success.  Look forward to visiting again!

.

Repacking....to the airport for a ride on Air Serbia?  Air Serbia??  No Serbia Air.  Remember the old JAT (Yugoslav Air Transport)?  The United Arab Emirates bought in and teamed up with JAT and they renamed the company Air Serbia last year.  First stop Abu Dhabi.  Hope those old commies get it right this time...Shahk, Rattle and Role?  And they didn't name it "Arab Serbia" because?

Is he driving the bus?  Nah, these Serbs are wild about this young tennis player...love.  Actually, the plane was clean, new and the cabin stews did a great job.  And they didn't charge Boca for all those extra icons...meaning weight.  Good job Air Serb.  Kudo's and good luck.

HOTEL MOSCVA
The building was built in 1906 for the "Russian" insurance company, and is one of Belgrade's notable landmarks.  Located in the core of downtown Belgrade, close to the Sava River.  Of course acquired by a historical overthrow...a Russian company initially put its Belgrade headquarters here.

Out our window...

Pleep likes the street action and the idea the Parliament is right down the road...

Lots of glorification of Russia in the design.  It was "opened" by the King of Serbia- King Peter.
The front desk clerk made sure Pleep not only had a copy of the Moscva Rules, but that he also agreed to abide by them...keep that dream alive Natasha.

With a political nod towards the Russian Empire and away from  Austria- Hungary...then during WWII the Gestapo moved in transforming it into it's headquarters and they renamed it "Hotel Velika Serbia".  Of course looting removed paintings and silverware.  Post war it was liberated back to a hotel- a la communism.

This 4 star hotel has had lots of famous visitors....Albert Einstein, Robert Denero, Brad Pitt and load of Hollywood types, Indira Gandhi, Murammar al- Gaddafffi..even Luciano Pavarotti.  Pleep picked out his favorite former guests...

and figured if Arafat could have a portrait so should he.  Promptly telling the hotel manager he was ready to pose for his photo.

And Bubs found his favorite part of the hotel.

Surprise visit...from Belgrade cousin Dragan and his lovely daughter Marija.  I had never met them before and the surprise was welcome.  My Belgrade family is from my grandfathers side...details to follow of course....

Pleep wants to know what the heck is going on out front of the hotel??  and now has Bubs attention too.  What's the crowd all about?  A street market?  No it's football (to US we call it soccer) stickers being traded.

Football Sticker Mania and Madness?

A cousin showed me his, oops, I mean his son's sticker book...
 Go Germany?

Yes, my wife is insisting on Cevaps...so you pick the place.   Boca has never met a cevap (Serbian Sausage) she didn't love...

Skadarlija sounds good.  This tiny bohemian enclave has some excellent people watching and good Serb food.  The street received its current name in 1872 in honor of the Albanian city of Shkoder and by the turn of the century the street became a haunt and hangout for Belgrade's artists, actors, writers and musicians...kinda like Belgrade's answer to Montmartre in Paris.  Hey Bubba, can you handle the cobblestone street?

A bunch of old-time restaurants to chose from.  Large groups of friends and family gather here to eat, drink the Yelen Beer (Bubs loved the deer theme), listen to the music, talk loudly and over each other and of course laugh.  Endless plates of meat and gypsy bands.  Lots of students and tourists too.
