DAY 54 B THE KICK OFF TAUCK TOUR- PORTUGAL AND SPAIN

Round 'em Up
Hi, hello, how are you yeah yeah yeah.  Joe, our tour director for the next 2 weeks herds us on the bus for a city tour.  Nice bus Joe.

Lisboa- Spanish pronunciation, has a population of 547,631 with about 3 million in the outlying area- approximately 27% of the countries pop.  Hey, this place had 35,000 folks living here in 1300 AD!

Lisboa is one of the oldest cities in the world- predating London, Paris and Rome by centuries.

Colorful graffiti...a new age European art form these days.  Oy.

Restoration of some of those old buildings.  Lots of that going on all over Europe.  Bravo.  America take note...we tend to knock stuff down and rebuild.  Maybe our "stuff" is just too new to be worthy of saving??

Most of the Portuguese expedition of the Age of Discovery left from Lisbon during the 15th- 17th centuries- don't forget a favorite son Vasco da Gama's visit to India in 1497.  Portugal lost it's independence to Spain in 1580 then a revolution in 1640 and here come those pesky Hapsburg's again- dual monarchy in Portugal and Spain until freedom again in 1688.  And don't forget about their revolution and booting the monarchy out in 1910.  Asta lavista King and Queen.

Belem Tower
One of the most famous landmarks, built in 1515.  UNESCO World Heritage Site of course.  Originally built as a fortified lighthouse to guard the entrance to the port.

The famous aqueduct...still standing from Roman times.

Alfama
The oldest district of Lisboa...the Castle of Sao Jorge- between 409 and 429 the city was occupied by Samaritans the Alans and Vandals then the Muslims.  Their occupation is very noticeable in the alfama area- Arabic names this and that still prevail.   Narrow streets and loads of small squares and a bunch of Fado bars.  Fado what???

Mosterio du Jeronimos-their 2nd UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One of it's original purposes was to defend the city.  We enjoyed a quick visit to check it out.

Oh please, maybe she won't notice the church Bubs.  I am sure you are churched out at this point....

Loaded with 17th-18th century built Baroque coaches- The National Coach Museum.

The museum is housed in the old Horse Riding Arena of the Belem Palace, which is now the official residence of the President of Portugal.
The museum was created in 1905 by the Queen, to house an extensive collection of carriages, belonging to the Portuguese Royals.
The collection gives a full picture of the development of carriages from the late 16th through the 19th centuries...
made in Italy, Portugal, France, Spain, Austria and England.
Pleep tried to talk the guards into giving him a ride...
Even some Popes have taken a ride in them...it's cool to be the King or Pope or???

Our faithful tour guide, Joe (an American of Portuguese decent), introduced us to....Custard Tarts- creamy, flaky and served warm.  The original pastry cafe in the Belem district (next to the monastery) is where the dessert was invented.

World famous????

Joe,  Boca's not much on sweets, more of a meat and potatoes gal...
But wait, this is absolutely relish...have any more????

A very cool monument to The Discoveries...

Now that's a lot of carving Boca.  And keep that darn monkey off the monument!

Never mind that Bub, I'm on the hunt for more of those fabulous tarts!

Back at the 4 Seasons Ritz:  The Requisite Evening Reception
Oh joy, another cocktail party and dinner.
Yes, Bubs you lucky dude with the 2 best babes on the tour on your arms.  And don't forget about figuring out how to make an orchid like this back in Naples...

There were 32 of us on the tour- only 29 to meet...Boca govern yourself accordingly please.  And again,  your reputation has preceded you.
Joe, leads us in song.

Are you from Joisey??
Ok, who brought the monkey??

Where are my underwear??? This poor fellow didn't receive his luggage...

OK, enough already with the introductions.  Let's eat- I'm hungry.

Yeah, they don't look too bad.  Time will tell.  After the ancient crowd on the River Cruise we are ready for some action,...be careful what you wish for Bubs.

Don't worry Bubba, Annie is here to save you!
