KNOWN AS A UNIVERSITY TOWN-home to University of Oxford (the oldest in the English speaking world) and Oxford Brookes University. And with the influx of migrant labor to the car plants (mini cooper) and hospitals, resent immigration from south Asia and a large student population gives Oxford quite the cosmopolitan character.
Started in 1096 and ramped up in 1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. There are 38 colleges, which are self governed and financially independent. They are related to the central University in the UK's Federal system. There are 6 private halls funded by different Christian denominations which still retain their Christian character.

the Oxford Movement sought to revitalize the Catholic aspects of the Anglican Church. In 1860 the new University Museum was the scene of a famous debate between Thomas Huxley, champion of evolution, and Bishop Wiberforce.

From 1978, academic halls were established for women and they were admitted to full membership of the University in 1920. There are over 22,000 students at Oxford (11,772 undergrads and 9,850 grad students- of which 65% come from outside the UK). The staff comes from 100 different countries and the students from 140. Take a braniac to lunch? Lots of interesting people/student watching around here. And Bubba asked one young student, "so how'd the football team do boy?"

But I couldn't resist a visit...as Bubs yelled out to me DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!
